Summer Student Position: French Language Translation

Planned Parenthood Ottawa (PPO) seeks a bilingual francophone student in translation studies or media/communication studies for a summer position. PPO is a pro-choice organization promoting healthy sexuality and supporting informed sexual and reproductive health choices through education, counselling, information, and referral services. The Summer Student will contribute to PPO’s French language capacity via the following tasks:


·         Conducting an environmental scan of existing sexual and reproductive health services that serve francophones and French speaking individuals in Ottawa, with a particular focus on services concerning gender equality, gender identity and sexual orientation, persons with disabilities, new Canadians, Indigenous and racialized peoples, and persons who are homeless or street involved.


·         Review PPO’s health promotion materials


·         Translate materials into French and coordinate production


·         Work with staff members and community partners to adapt and/or develop new materials to best meet the sexual health needs of francophones and French language speakers in Ottawa


The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications/skills:

-          Knowledge of translation methodologies OR media/communications as gained through post-secondary education;

-          Excellent oral and written skills in French; working knowledge in English

-          Strong administrative and interpersonal skills;

-          Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a small team and to work independently;

-          Knowledge of sexual and reproductive health and programs would be an asset;

-          Must be comfortable working in a pro-choice, GLBT friendly, anti-racist, anti-oppressive and sex positive environment.


This position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program. Candidates must demonstrate the following:

-          be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;

-          have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to

-          return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;

-          be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has

-          been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act2; and,

-          be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.


Anticipated Start date: Immediately.

Pay Rate: $11.40 per hour/37.5 hours per week.
